Filter bed and biofilm carrier in wastewater treatment and drainage systems.
The granule's porous internal surface gives biofilm somewhere to establish, which is why it is used in trickling filters and constructed wetlands.
Being chemically inert and resistant to attrition, the bed lasts without the periodic replacement other media need.
