Plant & production process

Expanded clay is made from clay — but what decides its quality is heat and time.

  1. 01

    Extraction & homogenisation

Clay is extracted from selected deposits and homogenised under cover to limit variation in the chemistry of the kiln feed.

  2. 02

    Preparation & granulation

Crushing, moisture adjustment and forming of the clay into green granules of controlled size.

  3. 03

    Pre-heating

Moisture is driven off gradually before the firing zone, so granules do not crack as they expand.

  4. 04

    Rotary kiln firing

Heating to roughly 1,200 °C. Released gases create the closed cellular structure and the granule expands to several times its original volume.

  5. 05

    Controlled cooling

Temperature is reduced in stages to lock in the structure; recovered heat feeds the pre-heater.

  6. 06

    Grading & storage

Multi-deck screens separate the standard fractions, which are stored in dedicated silos.

  7. 07

    Packing & loading

Loaded in bulk, 1 m³ big bags or 50-litre sacks, with the consignment certificate of analysis.
